About the Author

Miroslav Kubat, Associate Professor at the University of Miami, has been teaching and studying machine learning for more than a quarter century. Over the years, he has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, co-edited two books, served on the program committees of some 60 program conferences and workshops, and is the member of the editorial boards of three scientific journals. He is widely credited for having co-pioneered research in two major branches of the discipline: induction of time-varying concepts and learning from imbalanced training sets. Apart from that, he contributed to induction from multi-label examples, induction of hierarchically organized classes, genetic algorithms, initialization of neural networks, and other problems.

Loved the Book

Kubat approaches the field of machine learning in a very mathematical yet intuitive way. The book begins with a conceptual understanding of classification through the use of Johnny's pies and continues to step-by-step build upon this knowledge through each chapter. Although there are programming challenges at the end of most chapters, no actual code is used in this book. You must be able to properly program using a mathematical basis to utilize this book to its fullest potential. Kubat smoothly teaches Machine Learning in a comprehensive and conceptual way so that you really understand the field fundamentally.

If you are going to read one book on machine learning, read this one

This is a must read for anyone that wants to get into machine learning. It covers all the main algorithms and practical challenges of building complex models. For a very technical book it is a very easy read, and the questions are a great way to test the understanding of the material learned. The way the material is organized is very interesting too, addressing machine learning from the multiple angles I usually look at things in real life.

Far from being entropic, Karachi's polity is predicated upon organisational, interpretative and pragmatic routines that have made violence "manageable" for its populations. Whether such "ordered disorder" is viable in the long term remains to be seen, but for now Karachi works despite-and sometimes through-violence.

About the Author

Laurent Gayer is a research fellow at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), currently posted at the Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH) in Delhi. He is also Research Associate at the Centre d'Etudes de l'Inde et de l'Asie du Sud in Paris. He has coedited, with Christophe Jaffrelot, Armed Militias of South Asia: Fundamentalists, Maoists, and Separatists, and Muslims in Indian Cities: Trajectories of Marginalization, both of which are available from OUP.

This painstakingly researched book by a French author, who uses his Urdu skills and personal knowledge of Karachi's teeming slums to decipher the various conflicts that beset this megalopolis, sets the Gold Standard for a portrait of Pakistan's economic heart. Each chapter reveals the multi-layered realities of Karachi. The book helps you understand the ethnic, sectarian, and economic conflicts that rage simultaneously. The picture is of a city that represents Pakistan in microcosm. If Karachi fails, Pakistan fails. If Karachi hangs together, there is hope for Pakistan. Read this with a companion gripping novel "The Prisoner" by Omar Shahid Hamid to get a flavor of life in Karachi.Gayer has taken Steve Inskeep's brilliant reportage in Instant City and given it academic heft and rigor.A must read for policymakers in Pakistan and the region, and interested citizens of Pakistan.

A serious, smooth flowing and objective analysis of conflict in Karachi. Several works of fiction and non-fiction have appeared recently on Karachi but Gayer's book tops them all. The text flows smoothly and artfully uses Urdu literature, at times, to explain conditions. Its after a while that I have enjoyed a work of non-fiction so much.

Accurate, Complex, Wonderful

I bought this book as soon as it came out from the Toddstore, and paid a lot more than it costs on Amazon... Anyway, I have been playing selections from the book every couple of days for the last 2 months on the piano because it is so addicting. The music is pure Todd - complex chords, some pieces (Love of the Common Man) that I haven't even tried yet because they are written in a key with more sharps than naturals, but a great sampling of his music. All of the songs except "Just One Victory" incorporate the melody into the piano part, as compared to the "Something/Anything" piano book that I have from the 1970s. Challenging and a lot of fun to play, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to play Todd Rundgren songs.

as a long time Todd fan, it is so wonderful to have these songs in one book. my only objection is that there is a preponderance of songs from "Something/Anything". For most people that is a great thing, but I am such a fanatic that I already own the music book to that classic work of genius, and I would have liked more songs from other albums. But to have the music to "Just One Victory" is heaven on a piece of paper!!

Excellent choice - Certainly more than a reference work

This book is more than a reference book.
It is expensive but also one of its kind! Well organized, extensively covering all claimed scientific fields and has such a vast number of synonyms in each language (in English for example it presents over 22.000 cross-referenced synonyms) that could be also used as a scientific thesaurus.

The incorporation of the Greek, Italian and Latin languages in this singe volume is without doubt a great accomplishment since all the previous languages are source languages of scientific terminology of the fields of life sciences.
Although most scientific dictionaries lack grammatical information, this book presents a clear brief info that is very helpful for all those trying to compile scientific texts in a foreign language.

Closing this review it would be a mistake to overlook that in its 2590 pages one can find the modern translation of almost any term -from- and -to- any language between English Greek German Italian and Latin.
