These obsessive beliefs combined naturally with the specific influences and motives of powerful political and commercial lobbies to stoke the fires of aggression. Failing over several decades to make any visible progress by more or less peaceful policies, they turned, first, to economic warfare by means of propaganda and pseudo-legal claims to maritime sovereignty; finally (in 1652) to all-out eco� nomic and naval warfare.

Will make you angry, sad, but glad your teacher is making you dish out the money.

Systemic racism and how its rooted into many institutions. Most of the chapters are all short 1-3 or 5 page stories that do hit "Race, Class, Gender, and Some." Some "chapters" were extremely liberal...but that was due mainly to the author for those stories. So think of it overall as a collection of stories. If you're looking for voices from narratives you normally don't see at the front of Barnes & Nobles (i.e., young girl's version of life in WWII Japanese internment camps), then this would be a good start.

Some of my classmates were angry and uncomfortable. Great! That meant the reading wouldn't be too boring. Made me uncomfortable as well reading stuff that many choose to ignore/or refuge in it being in the past. Others started to use the usual political rhetoric/charges to defend either why the book wasn't great to them, to what they "really" needed to learn, etc. If a book holds info about race, class, gender....in the United States...expect multi-cultural/intersectionality/and your stuff to flip.

This ain't some textbook mentioning a few things, some dates, and where we are now for $30.

Unfortunately, you're probably going to learn a few things.

Odd omission of basic info

On the surface, this text is fairly devoted to discussing issues of diversity and discrimination within the groups noted on the cover. However, even in this most recent version, there are glaring omissions and badly chosen inclusions which frankly perpetuate the problem this collection is attempting to help resolve. On matters of race and class, it does a fairly solid job from where I sit. I'm finding its handling of gender and sexuality to be rather short-sighted and sometimes downright erasing. For what it includes, I'd fault it for choosing the Lorber essay for its over-reliance on the claim that "doing gender" is gender identity. That approach contributes heavily to the philosophy of anti-trans radical feminists who claim trans women are faking it to gain access to women's spaces. It also directly contradicts the lived experiences of trans people, who perform gender in a myriad of ways but first and foremost know our gender from within as a core state of being.

That last sentence includes people whose gender identity is fluid or otherwise outside the binary, which brings me to my second problem. Every last essay on gender spoke only of the binary genders. In a 2017 edition, that is a gross omission. When even Bill Nye or Adam Savage can look at the research and see the diversity within human biology and psychology, this text's failure to do so is almost mind-boggling. It also entirely omits trans men from the discussion, and there are writers from that group with piercing analyses of both feminine and masculine gender roles who could be heard from. The least they could've done is check in with Chaz Bono.

As for its approach to discussing sexual orientation, it again commits the error of only discussing the assumed binary of heterosexual vs homosexual. Worse, it does so by relying on discussing gay identities only. It has no essays from lesbians discussing themselves. It also completely fails to account for bisexuality (by which I mean the umbrella term for non-monosexual identities) or asexuality. Some of the essays even erase bisexuals from existence entirely until they use the acronym LGBT as a short form for "gays, lesbians, and drag queens" or swaps in transgender women for the third group (see "The Ghosts of Stonewall" for one example).

I shouldn't have felt erased by a text that wants to reduce discrimination and increase understanding. And yet, there I was, absent from the conversation because Rothenberg couldn't be bothered to realize more exists beyond the binaries she's comfortable with maintaining. She also committed a faux pas against the trans women she included by letting in someone who claimed all gender is constructed and performed. Some might argue this is an introductory text and should be forgiven. But when a social introduction tells you about most of the faces in the room and ignores the rest, the ones who are passed over are right to see that as rude. We who were ignored by Rothenberg's choices are just as present as the snubbed people at the hypothetical gathering. I hope she improves her approach for the next edition so future readers receive a better introduction, not a curated one that rejects valid voices in the name of whatever ideal she thought she was serving.

Great compilation of articles!

I used this book for an introductory class to Race, Class and Gender at my university. I have read more than 60% of the book and almost all of the articles were enjoyable, especially those in section 6, which cover several author's personal experiences with racism. I have taken a few classes that have discussed these topics in the past, but not to the extent that we covered. This book is highly valuable to those interested in learning about race, class, and gender in America. Some of the articles I had read before, but the fact they were included in the text only highlights their validity. It has also been helpful in my daily conversations with people, and I tend to reference information from it. If it weren't so expensive, I would purchase my rental for future reference.

Penelope J. E. Davies is Associate Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. She is a scholar of Greek and Roman art and architecture as well as a field archaeologist. Not to be mixed with bananas

This is the required book for my College Art History class. Well chosen pictures for each chapter. From what I can tell, there's very little difference between this and the 9th edition. WARNING: Do not leave a banana in your back pack with this book. I forgot I had one packed in there, and it got old and leaked moldy banana juice ALL over the bottom corner of this book. Completely killed the resale value. Now I feel sick every time I start to read it.

I purchased this text for a History of Western Art class. It is well organized, containing significant information, lovely photos, chapter summaries, and a time-line chart for each chapter. Well written book on asexuality.

I myself am an aromantic asexual and can personally identify with much of this book. Its not just for those like me its also for anyone who wants to learn about asexuality. It addressed subjects ranging from common pitfalls, the asexual spectrum, misunderstandings, communitys,to being comfortable with who you are.

Terrible - skips important functions, and no mid-ground

I bought this book hoping to learn from scratch - as one would assume you can normally do from a "For Dummies" book. I own 12 "For Dummies" books on various subjects, but this has by far been the most scattered in flow and difficult to process.
While the book exhausts you with lengthy dissertations on all of the possible variable types before you even get to write anything useful, it then completely leaves out the really useful information and techniques like how to write a program that can save text output into a separate file. There is no CD included, leaving you to have to go to the author's website and download all of the support files you'll need to cover your topics of interest. While I did find a "bonus" chapter on the author's website that covered creating programs that read from and write to text files, the code he published with it had errors and would not compile.
Finally, I say there is no "mid ground" because it seems he can only take you along at either 5mph or 200mph - there isn't much in-between. There is a lot of "we'll cover that later" (my quotes) but it doesn't get covered in time to help you understand what he's discussing just a few pages later.
BIG disappointment. I'm now looking for another tutorial source on C#.

Club that beats the dead horse...

I'm not saying this was a bad book. It just didn't jive with me, and I don't feel like I got very far with it. This book is the club that beats the proverbial dead horse. At times, I felt like I was taking the beating.

I am a total beginner, and the first sections were very useful in understanding basic concepts of programming in general. I'm still reading it, but it's draining me of motivation to write any more code. After a couple of months, I'm not a whole lot better at writing code. I definitely understand it better, however I not DOING much better.

Flavors upon flavors of a little thing seem to be the overiding theme of this book. I was really looking for a more general overview and snippets that would help catapult me into writing more complex code than what is presented.

This book may be an ideal supplement with another book, or books. It may even be a good reference when you're running into trouble understanding concepts of C# programming. The detail IS there. I was looking for snippets that I could actually use for very low level apps I'm trying to write. I guess I didn't need to buy a book for that. I was a fool, and my money soon parted from me.

Good But Could be Better

It must be something in our culture that causes writers of technical information to not 'get it' when they are explaining technical issues. This is a good book, relative to books on C# but there is still too much of the assumption of a lot of C# books that one is coming from a C or C++ background.

I should think any book on this subject would spend the first chapter(s) on giving one an overall architectural picture of the product. EVERYTHING (almost) in C# is a class yet it's not until Chapter 7 that we even begin to deal with the idea of a class. Everyone seems to think the most important thing in explaining code is to get you to write 'Hello World.' It isn't. Doing so before having any idea of what is going on or why is an exercise in aping. Instead of the 'here's a piece, here's a piece, here's a piece of it and I hope you can stitch together the fabric that allows it all to work' approach, I'd like to see an overall architectural picture laid out and then the pieces filled in. That's how I learn. A philosopher (Mortimer Adler) once wrote a book on how to read a book. The idea was to read all the chapter headings, then the table of contents. Then one would flip through the book reading all of what was in bold. The idea was to build the overall architecture of the book in one's mind to have something to hang the details on. Most 'programming language' writers start right off with detail after detail after detail until one has a mountain of detail to sort through and make sense of but still no overall theme with which to do the job. I'm really not picking on the two authors of this book: they simply are doing what everyone in the industry seems to do but it's annoying as hell.

One other small point is that every time something is explained the author(s) should make an attempt to put it in context and to use contextually relevant examples. Take the chapter on collections. People coming from a background of database languages may not have ever had to use or think of a 'hash table' so to use the idea to define a 'dictionary' (which in the database world is quite a different thing) is to leave those readers out in the cold. It's not that it can't be figured out but why should I have to expend great amounts of energy trying to figure out what the author is saying when with a sentence or two it could have been very clear? And then to the lack of context when discussing 'collections.' How are these things used? In what context? What distinguishes the use of a list from an array from a dictionary from a hash table? Nothing. What about data persistence? Nothing. What about dealing with 10 million records? Nothing.

But the reason I gave it three stars instead of four was the all too often occurrence of "I don't explain this here, if you want to know what I'm talking about you have to go to the bonus chapter on the website." Ah, a bonus! I should be grateful, right? Instead I'm annoyed at the assumption I'll be reading this book whilst sitting next to a computer. With internet access. It's irritating even when I am sitting next to one with access. If you're going to deal with a topic, deal with it in one place. Separate the book from the website material so it doesn't interfere with the flow of reading. The way it's been done here I feel like I'm constantly tripping over incomplete information. Bonus material should be on top of, in addition to, not critical to your understanding but put somewhere else.

Beautifully done, great recipes

I recently stayed at Miraval and picked up their cookbook during my stay. I am very impressed with the quality of the book and the fabulous recipes. The book also has excellent tips on stocking your pantry, what kitchen utensils are most helpful, etc. The photos are mouthwatering! I have tried several of the recipes of food I actually ate during my stay at Miraval and found I really could duplicate some of their marvelous cuisine! This cookbook would make a wonderful wedding gift. Although I wouldn't consider myself a health food person, the recipes in this book are so yummy I am becoming a mindful eater and smiling the whole time. Thank you Miraval.

Mindful Eating is an absolutely beautiful book with delicious, healthy recipes. The book is written by the chefs of Miraval Resort in Arizona and the relaxing spa environment is communicated on each page with stunning photos and amazing meals. With Miraval pantry essentials, it is easy to step into mindful meals such as Breakfast Parfait, Garden Quiche, Teff Banana Bread, and Cucumber Avocado Soup, it makes healthy eating fun and flavorful. This book is packed with a number of vegan and gluten-free options, and while it is not a strictly vegetarian book, it is packed with all sorts of recipes of every dietary need. Beyond delicious recipes, there are a number of staples that make this book a kitchen find - with recipes like Miraval Mayonnaise, Citrus Vinaigrette, and Spicy Peanut Sauce and additional basics like Risotto and Roasted Vegetables, this book covers everything that you might want to revamp your repertoire. I love that recipes like Cumin-Scented Black Bean Cakes and Hummus and Baked Tofu Flatbread are healthy and packed with fresh ingredients.

While not every recipe in the book is an ideal weeknight meal (some take a bit more prep time and are more involved), with the vast array of options in Mindful Eating, there is no shortage of healthy mealtime options for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Like the principle of the book, however, does not contain all of the Miraval recipes, and some ingredients are hard to find or are limited by region or country. The gist is good however one needs to be a creative cook to take this from spa restaurant menu to dinner table cuisine.

This should be your first F# book

If you're looking for your first F# book, get this one. After just a few chapters, you'll see just how beautiful and simple F# is. The programs you'll write will be shorter and easier to understand than programs you write in other languages. Your code will have all the safety of .NET's static type system, but the brevity of dynamically typed languages such as Python. You'll be able to walk away from your code for a year, and when you return to it you'll immediately see what you were doing. You'll be able to tap into the huge .NET ecosystem, and use libraries written in any other .NET language. Lastly, your F# programs will run on Linux and OSX using Mono. Chris Smith's writing is clear, succinct, and fun to read. For your second book on F#, try Expert F# 3.0.

Excellent overview on the F# language. Some unneeded content.

Excellent coverage on all the language's features.
However there are some parts that I didn't like:

The first is that I think I didn't need to read all the way on how to implement an inverted index search engine. Just the idea of how it's implemented in some chapter would be fine. After all I bought an F# book, not a search engine book.
The other, and for a similar reason, is that the book explains the .Net framework again. I understand that the book states that "no previous experience with functional programming or .NET is required" but, in my opinion, I should have read that somewhere in the cover.

I could have used:
More techniques that involves integrations with Type Descriptors.
More functional programming techniques like the part that explains tail recursion, continuations, etc, it was an excellent chapter. I wish that part could have been longer. I would gladly trade it with the Events chapter or the search engine one.

An okay first step for F#

A good book, but as a seasoned C# developer I found it jumped around a lot. In the code samples the book often uses techniques it hasn't even covered yet, and for the more bizarre and ugly aspects of the F# language(at least to a C# programmer's perspective) it very often says "we'll explain this later" without ever really doing so.

Still, a good introduction to F# that left me wanting to learn more and understand why they did things a certain way.

Really dry and full of useless information

Sure, there are some really interesting insights. Sure, Bill Gates recommends it.

But, you know what? I had to slog through it, and I'm normally fascinated with economics.

Here's why: Smil draws some really interesting insights from economic data, but decided to include all of that economic data in pretty much raw text. There's narry a graph or chart in the entire book, but rather entire pages full of "In 1980, the United States' GDP was $3.7 trillion. In 1981, it was $3.9 trillion. In 1982, it was $4 trillion. This represents a 9% growth over 3 years."

There's a reason graphs were invented: to show numerical data in a way that's easier to understand at a glance. If Smil re-wrote the book with this one fix, it would be a quarter the length and actually enjoyable to read.

Until then, don't bother.

A top-notch historical-scientific book with past accomplishments to emulate, and business strategy pitfalls to avoid

I was pretty sure I would appreciate this book even before I bought it, since Prof. Smil's track-record for books is impeccable. Since the future of U.S. manufacturing and its essential role for U.S. energy security is of interest to me, I decided to look at the broad picture that Prof. Smil provides here. In particular, I am interested in how a combination of solar thermal infrastructure and advanced nuclear power stations -- all U.S. built -- will improve U.S. security, prosperity, and climate stability. To understand where we need to go, and how to get there, an expertly written and comprehensive history needs to be understood.

After reading the book I grasped the high growth years and the key role of electricity generation in the late 1800s, the U.S. leadership in many fields in the 1950s and 60s (truly impressive in light of today's competition with China and Western Europe), and the gradual (and sometimes steep) decline in the 70s and 80s.

Just as in his other books, Prof. Smil has a way of presenting insights that few realize, just a few here are: the overall increase resource intensity in spite of the common idea that an information economy and computers reduce resource consumption; the narrative showing US federal government and semiconductor chip company R&D alliances (a partial model for U.S. energy infrastructure alliances in the future?). Finally, there is Prof. Smil's partly inspiring and partly foreboding last chapter of the book.

Manufacturing vs service economy

Provides well documented review and historical significance of manufacturing in the development of the US economy and compares it with other nations. Has a well-reasoned argument for building our economic base as an important corner-stone of the economy. Automation will prevent huge increases in employment, but will likely help provide jobs for properly trained workers. The Walmart's of the country have little loyalty to the country seeking only to maximize profit by seeking the lowest cost labor. This being the case we need to find ways to encourage companies to sell products from here and return capital here to bring the trade deficit back into balance.The imbalance in manufacturing and service and consumption appear to be creating areas of economic illness.
