Dr. Kumar has a Master's degree in technology from The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and a Ph.D. from The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He has over 22 years of experience in the field of information technology at various levels and in organizations such as Computer Vision Corporation (Singapore), Parametric Technologies (Seoul, S. Korea), Sun Microsystems (India) and Infosys Technologies Ltd. Prior to initiating Altius Inc, Dr. Kumar was the Director and Chief Architect at the Global Technology Office of Cognizant Technology Solutions (India). He has been working on enterprise technology solutions for more than 12 years, particularly focusing on Java, JEE, web services, service oriented architecture and open source technologies. So where is the beef?

A well written book that did not dig deeply into the religion, but rather worked over modern situations and Islam. I really can not see much different in it and christianity other than Christ and that Muhammud guy.
Islam gets a bad rap by all the radicals of the religion. Same as christianity during the crusades. It is an okay book, but I would have like to have seen more about Islam.

The Straight Path is a straightforward and accessible historical introduction to Islam theology, politics, and law. John Esposito, the author, begins with Muhammad and the Quran, basic Islamic dogma, and the creation of the Islamic community. He then sketches the history of the Islamic world in the medieval period, covering the Umayyads, the Abbasid Caliphate, the Crusades and the later Islamic empires, which are Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal. Some of the divisions within Islam are the Sunni/Shia spilt, the Ismailis, the Druze and the diversity of its mystical and legal traditions.
Next, Esposito explains Islamic theology and law in depth. Medieval theological conflicts centered on the relationship of faith, the status of grave sinners, and the connection between the absolute power of God and human free will. An essential figure was the tenth century synthesizer al-Ashari, whose followers became the leaders of the dominant school of Sunni theology. The five pillars of Islam are the professions of faith, prayer, almsgiving, the Ramadan fast and Hajj; the pilgrimage to Mecca. Finally, Esposito also touches on family law - divorce and inheritance, the relation between customary practice and Quranic prescription by showing the rules about veiling and seclusion, Sufism and Shia differences.
With its primarily historic approach, The Straight Path only succeeds to give a feel for the role Islam plays in the lives of particular believers. Overall, The Straight Path works well, giving a moral feel for Islam's ancient depth and geographical reach.

The Best Introductory Text on Islam

This book is by far the best introductory text on Islam that I have encountered. The important thing to keep in mind is that it is an introductory text, and its function as such should be kept in mind. The book provides an excellent overview, broken down into 6 different issues/subjects of the Islamic world, and the text is further broken down into clearly delineated and manageable chunks, just as an introductory text should be. Especially good is the elegant and concise way in which the history of the beginnings of Islam are laid out. Perhaps less strong is some of the discussion of the different ways that Muslims have approached the issue of reforming Islam, which I found to be repetitive and vague at the same time.
One person was disappointed that the author often mentions a lot of names and concepts, and then doesn't describe them much. Well, that is the PURPOSE of an introductory text, to introduce people to ideas that they can then pursue further in specialized texts if they are interested. Similary, why would one expect to find information on minority non-Islam religious groups or the African slave trade in a book about Islam? The former would be found in a comparitive religion text, the latter, perhaps in a history of Islamic people, but not an introductory text on Islam.

Favorite SQL Book

This is the best SQL book I've used for learning SQL. It goes into just enough detail to understand the concepts presented, without bogging down the learning process with excessive explanations. I've learned more after working through just over half of the book than after several previous books, tutorials and online videos combined. Overall, I'm thoroughly impressed with this book.

There is a somewhat annoying issue with the related code for this book. Throughout each chapter, scripts need to be ran to update the practice databases (multiple times per chapter). Most of the time, the scripts have worked great. But, there were a few scripts that generated errors for me using SQL Server 2012 Developer version. At times, I have been able to troubleshoot the code and make some changes to run the scripts without errors, other times, I just leave the errors and work through the labs without any issues. I'd still recommend this book, even with this issue, as the errors have not interfered with learning SQL. If anything, it allows for some practice resolving issues with code, if one is so inclined. Obviously the code shouldn't generate errors and one would hope the authors would correct them.

The labs are well-written. The included Bug Catchers are helpful in validating how much you've retained.

This is like a really great textbook without the textbook price (esp. for the Kindle edition).

The Joes 2 Pros books have a pretty silly name, but they're serious stuff. Their series on the Structured Query Language is exhaustive (five volumes). The books aren't exactly high in production values (cover art and the like), but they are accessibly written and contain clear examples and challenging exercises for every concept. They maintain a comfortable pace, neither belaboring a point nor glossing over the important stuff. These books actually make it fun to learn SQL; that's not a thing you can say about many (or most?) textbooks.

Very Helpful SQL Server Reference Series

The Joes 2 Pros SQL Server 2012 books are a very useful resource to have around for newcomers or even seasoned DB developers who may not always use SQL Server as their most common development platform (like me). Each book chunks topics into a single small book make it affordable and giving the user the ability to select only those areas that they need help with.

Having them on a Kindle Device, iPad, PC, or Mac is indispensable in the workplace even though there are very cogent and very terse resources available to the SQL Server user/developer via MSDN and Google.

A welcome addition in my opinion to the Kindle Bookshelf of reference material.

I haven't tried my hand at candle making for over 40 years. This book is very helpful for a beginner. It is helpful in learning about wicks, and wax, scents and temperatures. Surely it will make learning candle making more fun and enjoyable and less stressful. I will use this book as a reference for sometime to come. It not only instructs but it gives the "why" behind the "how" making the instructions much more clear. I am sure that you will find this book helpful if you have never read a book on candle making. I am very glad that I purchased it and recommend it to you.

Good info but needs more

If you're interested in making votives or pillar candles this will help you but if you're wanting to find tips on container candles do not buy this book. I make so container candles and was hoping there would be some tips on those but no. But like I said if you are interested in pillars/votives/electric candles definitely check this book out. Also they have some info on supplies which I will be looking at.

Not as good as I thought

I purchased this book for my Spanish classes because of the reviews. To be honest, It is a bit confusing and boring. I don't think is a good book. There are better books with simple concepts like this unfortunately not in Spanish...

Perfect book for bilingual toddler!

I find it much easier to find baby books in Spanish than toddler books. I was happy to come across this simple book where my toddler can also "read" along with the story. Great illustrations, limited words (which we like at the toddler stage) and overall a happy "don't-give-up" moral to the story.

I grew up on this book (and the song based on the story). I bought this for my son who is raising his daughter to be bilingual. My dau-in-law reads to the baby in English, and my son converses and reads to her in Spanish. Simple, clean illustrations to a nice little story.
