Just a great book -- a must read

I've read a lot of popular books about investing. Some of them were helpful in introducing me to investing in general. I decided, however, that I wanted a more thorough knowledge of the subject. I bought "The Portable MBA in Investment" by Peter Bernstein and found it utterly incomprehensible. If I wanted to be well-grounded in investing, this was unacceptable.
I borrowed Sharpe's text from the library and have been blasting through it for the past few days. It isn't an easy text; anyone who wants to tackle the subject should have some background in math and statistics. And I would suggest that people be at least somewhat familiar with investing. Otherwise, they may be turned off completely by the stuff. Once you're ready to go, though, make sure you read Sharpe's book first.
I've sampled other texts, and Sharpe's is the clearest and most relevant. Nothing is omitted. Everything from factor models to reading stock tables is included. The book is extremely well-written. Most of the material is presented simply. For example, the formulas are illustrated with examples that make understanding infinitely easier. And each chapter has a sidebar called "Institutional Issues" which puts a real-world spin on the chapter's subject matter. An invaluable book for the serious investor.

Learning from a Nobel Prize Laureate

You do not pick up this book to get "tips" on making an easy million. It does not teach you how to chart nor pick a value/momentum stock based on fundamental analysis.

It does, however, teach you about the foundation of modern investment theory and concepts. William Sharpe is a professor at Stanford and a Nobel Prize winner in 1990, along with Markowitz, for portfolio theory. Sharpe later extended this and introduced Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and it is explained as part of a lesson in this book. Their work is THE fundamental investment Asset Pricing Model.

As others have mentioned, to get the most of this book, you need some understanding of investments and a solid understanding of statistics. With these in hand, you will gain knowledge from this book. It is not an easy read and it used in graduate schools (I used it while obtaining my MBA), but Sharpe does an excellent job at explaining and illustrating investment concepts.

If you want to create deeper understanding of investment knowledge and really want to know investments, this is your book. For example, instead of just knowing that diverification is important, know how diversification works.

Learned nothing

The physical condition of this book was terrible. I cannot resell this book because the cover was disfigured and had all barcodes and identifying pieces removed.

The content of this book was awful. I needed it for a class and I can honestly say I didn't learn a thing. This was a terrible book and it focused too much on the Big 5 Personality. There was not definitive, objective research within this book and if there was references, they were short and limited. This book was more speculation than education.

I had to read this book for a psychology of personality class and I really enjoyed it. The examples are really helpful, and the material is an easy read. I was originally dreading having to read another book for the semester, but this book wasn't at all what I was expecting. It's a great read. I highly recommend it for pleasure, or for work/school.

Brian Walrath and Robert Woods have brought together a series of essays on contemporary worship music. The ten essays are authored by knowledge-
able people from a variety of disciplines. The author of each section of the book gives a broad and honest appraisal of the history and the impact of contemporary Christian music.

The book gives the reader the feeling of attending a seminar on the subject of Christian music where the presenters deal with various aspects - both positive and negative - of contemporary Christian music and the influence of this music on the church.

The Message in the Music will be a great help to music students and to those who teach in the field of Christian music. Pastors, worship leaders, theologians, and writers and producers of Christian music will find this book a valuable resource. The book would also be very effective for small group discussion.

I found the book a very good read and most inspirational and informative.

Contemporary report, but lacking otherwise

I chose to purchase this book on account of the "VIEW NOW" feature on Amazon, which usually gives me a pretty fair chance to know what the book is about. The dazzling cover sure helped also. But, the majority of the content turned out to be empty stats on specific songs in Contemporary Christian Music. I was hoping for a message, as the first part of the title suggests, but it turned out to be much more geared towards the latter half of the title. For those desiring to dissect specific, popular, ACTUAL songs and lyrics in CCM, this is definitely the book for you. For instance, if a pastor isnt sure on playing specific songs like "Breathe" or "You Are My Life" in church, the book may prove of some value. But, if you are looking for a Biblical pro and con evaluating contemporary musical worship, its effects, origins and it's core value to Christians, I suggest you look elsewhere. Put it this way, the book focuses in on how a "donut" tastes, if it is sweet or sour, if it makes you cry or makes you happy, which is good to know, but fails to convince one whether or not that donut is healthy in the first place.

This well edited publication put into words what I had often felt: something was missing or awry in our contemporary church music. The best part is that each author offered constructive criticism and suggestions. This should be in the hands of worship leaders and pastors across the country in all types of churches. What a gift to the Christian community!

Finally found a Catholic "Total" Bible Commentary...been looking for one for years until this one was finally suggested to me. I owe that person a debt of gratitude if I can ever trace back to where this advice was given to me. Wish it were available in e format but it is about the size of my printed dictionary, larger than my NAB Catholic Study Bible when stuffing it into a bag it seems but not that much larger and thicker but it is somewhat...
I recommend this to any person seriously into bible studying or student.

So far, I find this Biblical Commentary very helpful with the Course I'm studying. It is a wonderful reference book but not one you begin on the first page and read through! It's scholarly and is laid out very satisfactorily.

A very interesting and helpful thick book, very complete and easy to use: practical but really encyclopedial (including more peripheral issues: Qumran, Apocrypha, geography, etc), erudite but sufficiently freed from any complication derived from exegetical theories and reconstructions.
