Very interesting and thorough

It is not only a how-to book, but one on the history and meanings of Sashiko and it's many designs. Her instructions are clear and concise, with several projects meant to increase your skill.

Not for beginners

I'm new to sashiko, and this book didn't offer much help. It has lots of designs and nice photographs, but the nitty gritty details (how to start/stop stitching, which needle to use, etc) were missing. When the author did offer specifics, she assumed the reader already knew the steps (she said to tie a square knot then a half hitch knot but didn't describe how). The author emphasized continuous machine stitching, yet most of the designs featured parallel lines. Doesn't that mean a lot of starting and stopping? The projects were attractive, but there were few step-by-step illustrations for how to make them.

In short, if you're an experienced sewist, you'll probably get more out of this book than I did. If you're a beginner, you might enjoy reading about the history of sashiko and seeing the beautiful designs, but you won't feel ready to start sewing them.

I find that people are still happy to engage in conversation on these topics from time ...

Charming, witty and clearly written, I think this book will appeal to many, I find it especially helpful in cases where people look at me in horror when I dump armfuls of thick philosophical and theological texts in front of them with the recommendation that they read them, weirdly enough people aren't so keen on spending hours, days, or months of their lives studying topics that they have little to no interest in... :p

However, I find that people are still happy to engage in conversation on these topics from time to time indicating that there is at least a spark of interest to work with and this book is just the thing to help fan the flames.

There are a couple of controversial stances on some issues that the author takes which I feel is worth noting for those Christians who have very strong views to the contrary, specifically for example, a more liberal view of homosexuality.

All in all though, I've found this book to be really helpful in reaching out to people and I'm going on to to purchasing my second hard copy

Harley-Davidson:The Complete History is a Huge Hardcover with beautiful slipcase that encompasses the history of this Great American Motorcycle,It has contributions/sections/chapters by several Authors and beautiful Pictures throughout.It is a really beautiful and all the information in there I Loved reading.America at it's finest,this book is a collectible and at times seem to nice to just let it lay anywhere.
It can't no better than this America,The Open Road,A Loud Harley blasting down the desert road on a deserted highway somewhere or Route 66.That's what I pictured when I read the book and looked at all the history,all the lore.My Favorite Harleys are The XLCR,Fatboy and softtail. no matter what Harley you ride or dream of you will love this book!

About the Author
Professor Robert L. Devaney received his A.B. from Holy Cross College and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1973. He taught at Northwestern University, Tufts University, and the University of Maryland before coming to Boston University in 1980. He served there as chairman of the Department of Mathematics from 1983 to 1986. His main area of research is dynamical systems, including Hamiltonian systems, complex analytic dynamics, and computer experiments in dynamics. He is the author of An Introduction to Chaotic Dynamical Systems, and Chaos, Fractals, and Dynamics: Computer Experiments in Modern Mathematics, which aims to explain the beauty of chaotic dynamics to high school students and teachers.

This text is a great begginners guide to chaotic systems, it provides very clear explanations and proofs as well as some examples to help you along.

There Are Better Choices

This is a fine text, and I was able to follow it fairly easily. However, it is rather dated (1992) and there have been improvements in the subject in several areas. I found Steven Strogatz's "Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos" (2001) a significantly better book for both content and readability.

Good text for a second or third year course

This is a good textbook to use for a second or third year course introducing dynamical systems. Using this book you could teach a course that both isn't too simple minded and yet isn't too abstract. The material in this book also motivates a lot of further deep material in dynamical systems, and I think that it could be encouraging to students who are seeing metric spaces, complex analysis and differential equations in purer settings to see that this theory has tangible applications. This would also be a good course for students not majoring in mathematics, to see that mathematics can be exciting in a way that a first year calculus or linear algebra course is not. There aren't many mathematics courses that could usefully be taken by mathematics students and non-mathematics students; the only other topic I can see being suitable is classical geometry.
