About the Author

David Feldman joined the faculty at College of the Atlantic in 1998, having completed a PhD in Physics at the University of California. He served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2003 - 2007. At COA Feldman has taught over twenty different courses in physics, mathematics, and computer science.

Feldman's research interests lie in the fields of statistical mechanics and nonlinear dynamics. In his research, he uses both analytic and computational techniques. Feldman has authored research papers in journals including Physical Review E, Chaos, and Advances in Complex Systems. He has recently begun a research project looking at trends in extreme precipitation events in Maine.

This is the most basic place do start studying Chaos and Fractals: From high algebra to Differential Equations.

Ive read a bunch of Chaos and Fractals books, and this one is really the basic place to start Chaos and Fractals math. And now with Prof Feldman's online course (Complexity Explorer website) theres really no excuse to learn the subject anymore :). Very well done Prof. Feldman!. This is a great book and I really felt envy of Prof Feldman Students.

Other book I really liked is Flake's Computational Beauty of Nature which you can read in parallel or after this one.

I have read many books on the subject. This one is the best. The author goes out of his way to explain things clearly. No matter how complex the topic, he does a great job explaining it with both words and graphics.

A must have

So I was fortunate enough to take David Feldman's MOOC through the Santa Fe Institute on dynamical systems. He was just amazing in the course, one of the most likeable teachers I have ever had. Dynamical systems (chaos and fractals are part of that, sort of, kind of), are not trivial to understand. Yet Dr. Feldman is such a master teacher that he makes it look easy and interesting, very interesting. The good news is that he writes like he teaches. This book gets into far more detail than the more popular titles by Gleik and others. It is not a tome like the ones targeted at math geniuses either. It is right in the middle, not too much, not too little, but just right. The middle bear of chaos. Feldman is as patient a writer as he is a teacher and will repeat himself in a masterful way to ensure you get the concept. He writing is approachable, just like he is. He is wicked smart, but does not need to rub it in your face. And he does not.

The book is broad in its aim to give you a complete overview of chaos and fractals (dynamical systems) along with the math, but in a way that anyone can get it. This is a must have. His MOOC is a must take and he is a gift to the world of students. He is that rare teacher you never forget and always appreciate and his book is the same.

About the Author

WOLFRAM HÖLAND, PhD, is the Head of the Department of Research and Development, Inorganic Chemistry Technical Fundamentals, at Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Liechtenstein. He is also a Lecturer in the Department of Inorganic Chemistry, Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH Zurich) in Switzerland. Dr. Höland is the recipient of several awards, including the Wöhler Prize of the German Chemical Society and the Turner Award of the International Commission on Glass.

GEORGE H. BEALL, PhD, received his PhD in geology from MIT in 1962 and was a Research Fellow in the Science and Technology Division of Corning Incorporated, Corning, New York. Until 1995, Dr. Beall was a Courtesy Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Cornell University, and has authored or coauthored approximately eighty technical papers and one book, and holds more than 100 U.S. patents.

This book makes me wish I could be an undergrad again, and study engineering

GLASS-CERAMIC TECHNOLOGY, 2nd ed., by W. Holand and G.H. Beall is a 414-page book printed on bright white paper. Almost every page has a line drawing showing polymers or figures showing phase diagrams. The figures show, e.g., volume vs. temperature, crystal growth vs. temperature, crystal growth vs. time, viscosity vs. temperature, and so on.

Photographs include beta-quartz solution (page 56), electron microscope photo (EM) of SiO2-Al2)3-Li2O-TiO2 glass (page 61), EM photos of other types of glass (pages 62, 63), scanning EM photo of leucite (pages 68, 69), photos of dentrites and sperulites (pages 71, 73), X-ray diffraction, lithium disilicate crystal agglomerates (page 85), crack propagation in lithium disilicate (page 88), and so on. The book also contains an 8-page section of glossy color photographs showing teeth. The teeth are made of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, fluoroapatite glass-ceramic, leucite glass-ceramic, opal glass-ceramic, and leucite-apatite glass-ceramic.

The book has four chapters:
(1) PRINCIPLES OF DESIGNING GLASS-CERAMIC FORMATON;
(2) COMPOSITION SYSTEMS FOR GLASS-CERAMICS;
(3) MICROSTRUCTURE CONTROL;
(4) APPLICATIONS OF GLASS-CERAMICS.

The book defines "glass-ceramics" in terms of method of manufacture, namely, "controlled nucleation and crystallization," and in terms of physical appearance, that is, "fine, randomly oriented grains" (page xvii). We read that ceramics was invented by S.D. Stookey who was making lithium silicate containing precipitated silver, where the heated materials at just above their glass transition temperature (450 degrees C) and exposed them to UV light, but once by accident heated at 850 degrees, which resulted in the creation of ceramics. (Ta-daaaaah!) Stookey remembered that "thermometer opals" contain titania, and so he decided to add titania as a nucleating agent, which promptly led to the invention of CORNING WARE. The drawing on the page shows glass crystals made with or without nucleation.

We learn of the various properties of glass-ceramics, e.g., zero shrinkage with temperature change, transparency, opacity, resorbability in chemicals, durability in chemicals, flexure strength (measured in units of Pascals), electrical insulation, electrical conductivity. We learn that there are six classes of glass-ceramics: (1) neosilicates, (2) sorosilicates, (3) cyclosilicates, (4) inosilicates, (5) phyllosilicates, and (6) tectosilicates. The book discloses how these differ in terms of ratios of silicon, oxygen, and aluminum.

In CHAPTER TWO, pages 75-90 concern lithium disilicate. This has one Si atom with two oxygen atoms, and two lithium atoms with one oxygen atom. We learn that Stookey discovered that one type of lithium disilicate, LITHIUM METASILICATE, has the property of being dissolvable in HF, resulting in the ability to be etched to form patterns. This compound can also be shaped by UV light to form precision parts, called Fotoceram (CORNING GLASS).

LITHIUM METASILICATE is made by adding cerium 3+ and silver 1+, and exposing to UV light to form cerium 4+ and silver (uncharged). With heating, the neutral silver forms particles of 8 nanometers wide, which serve as nucleation sites for crystallization. The crystals grow dendtritically. We also learn that LITHIUM DISILICATE has a high resistance, and thus is used in electrical engineering, and that it has high flexural strength. We learn that the unit of flexural strength is the Pascal, and that the flexural strength of LITHIUM DISILICATE can be 100-300 megaPascals (page 79). But later on, we learn about a type of LITHIUM DISILICATE containing aluminum and potassium with flexure strength of 450-740 megaPascals, which results in a glass-ceramic that can be machined.

Here is another excerpt from this book. Pages 185-187 concern BASALT. BASALT is renowned for its formation of amazing geological formations consisting of hexagonal columns. These occur at Devil's Causeway in Ireland, Devil's Postpile in California, Devil's Tower in Wyoming, and Boiling Pots in Hilo, Hawaii. Anyway, in this book, we learn that BASALT is SiO2-Al2O3-Fe2O3. The book tells us that basalt usually includes calcium oxide and magnesium oxide. We learn that if Fe2O3/FeO at a ratio about ½ is used, the resulting product is a fine-grained glass-ceramic. We learn that an especially fine-grained size can be achieved by including an oxidizing agent, e.g., ammonium nitrate, during crystallization. Although the book fails to disclose the advantage of fine grain size, we do learn that BASALT is noted for its easy processing by pressing and centrifugal casting, and that BASALT is used for roofing tile and liners for steel pipe.

I wanted to confirm some of these statements in the book, so I found the following information from CBP Engineering (Washington, PA): "Basalt is a neovolcanic eruptive rock which melts at approximately 1250°C, and can be cast in a similar way to cast iron. Basalt gravel of special chemical and mineralogical structure is melted in a furnace similar to an open hearth furnace. The molten magma flows through a homogenizing drum and is cast by means of casting ladles - like cast iron - into sand molds or chill molds (static cast) or in rotating chill molds (dynamic or centrifugal casting)." Okay, now I am satisfied, since CBP Engineering states that basalt is formed by casting.

An excellent monograph and textbook

Let me preface this review by saying that I am a metallurgist/materials scientist. As such, I am very familiar with the general materials science given in the book, but less so with the specifics regarding ceramic compositions, ceramic phase diagrams and alike. I mention this because this book was written for a specialist audience rather than a general one. That is not to say that people without the requisite background would get nothing from the book. I found the book to be very well written, clear and very accessible if you have a background in materials science, or inorganic and physical chemistry. Engineers and those involved with product development will find this book to be of great value even if they lack all of the prerequisites to understand all of the material without further study. I heartily recommend this book as a text and to materials scientists, engineers and others involved with materials research, product development and materials selection.

What is in the book --
The book is divided into a brief historical introduction and four lengthy chapters, each of which is divided into sub-sections. This history and these chapters cover:
1. History - I found this 3.5 page section to be very helpful as it put the material covered in the book into the perspective of the materials science that I was very familiar with. This section describes glass-ceramics as materials that consist of crystalline material in an amorphous glass matrix, which can be produced by the precipitation of crystalline material from the glass phase or the sintering of powdered glass. The amount of each material, their composition morphology and resulting properties are the subject of the rest of the book.
2. Crystalline Structures and Mineral Properties - This 72 page chapter is divided into sub-sections describing crystal structures, their nucleation and their growth from the parent glass.
3. Composition Systems for Glass-Ceramics - This is an even longer chapter (135 pages), which discusses individual types of glass ceramics, including those based on Silicates, Phosphates and Oxides.
4. Microstructure Control - This chapter describes the different types of structures that can be formed and how processing influences their development.
5. Applications of Glass-Ceramics - This is perhaps the most important chapter for a non-materials oriented audience. It details the myriad of applications of glass-ceramics; including cookware, rocket nosecones, optical instruments, electrical packaging (chip carriers), lasers, and medical applications (including biologically active materials that allow for attachment to cells and non-active materials when inert materials are required). There is a lengthy sub-section on dental applications that includes color photographs showing glass-ceramic teeth.
6. Appendix, References and Index - The book includes a lengthy appendix that shows three-dimensional representations of crystal structures, 29 pages of references and an index.

why just colour plates of false teeth ?

This text gives a comprehensive overview of glass ceramic composites; up to date for 2012. The first chapter introduces the subject, including the thermodynamics and kinetics of nucleation and crystal growth. Several models are given for nucleation processes. Some of the discussion on crystal growth is the traditional phenomenological, accompanied by nice black and white photos of microcrystals.

Later chapters delve into the often complex and sometimes variable compositions of many glasses. Triangular phase diagrams help illustrate the continuua of composites possible between the simple vertices of the triangles. Some of the phase diagrams also show trajectories that describe immiscibility of one mixture in another.

Another useful feature of the text is the detailed steps often supplied for synthesising a given composite. Enough information is given to be useful to a professional in this field.

Chapter 4 focuses on applications. Perhaps the most important is for the substrates of magnetic memory disks. Thus ceramics literally underpin the computer age.

There are a few colour plates. Mostly of false ceramic teeth embedded in jaws! I am not sure why the authors did not furnish plates of other non-dental applications. For example, images of computer disks might have been added.

The book is well suited as a reference of all the major composites. You do not necessarily need to read it cover to cover.

Grade 4-6-Zettie, 12, is a companion to the daughter of a once-wealthy Frenchman. An African slave, she was purchased as a gift for Marie-Louise and although well treated, she longs to be free. After Marie-Louise's father dies, her older brother threatens to sell the slaves and marry off his sister to an older, unattractive, but wealthy man to keep himself out of debtor's prison. Marie-Louise convinces her fiance to purchase Zettie as her wedding gift, and the two girls, with the help of a friend, flee to Spain, and then to America. They sail to a British-controlled fort in the area that would later become New York State. The rest of the book describes life at the fort, the effects of the French and Indian War on the relations with the Native Americans, and Marie-Louise's search for her younger brother, who had been captured by the Delaware Indians. The diary is a straightforward account with very little emotion. Zettie simply records the events of the day with few comments as to her thoughts and feelings, and her character is never fully developed. The other figures are even more shadowy. The quality of the black-and-white period maps, portraits, landscapes, etc., is poor. It is unfortunate that a book written about this time period, on which there is little fiction available for this age, is not up to the author's usual standard.

Gr. 5-9. Her mother died giving birth to her on a slave ship to France, and Lozette ("Zettie") grew up in France as companion and slave to upper-class Mary-Louise. Now at 12 she finds herself with her French mistress in New York Colony at the end of the French and Indian War in 1763. Like other books in the Dear America series, this story is told as a fictionalized diary, and as usual, the blend of fact and fiction, which includes a contrived "epilogue," is confusing, especially as most middle-graders won't know much about this early colonial history. But McKissack does provide an immediate view of the period (including the horrifying decision to give the Indians blankets infected with smallpox), and the personal story brings a fresh perspective to issues of race and class. Compared with some of the poor white servants, Zettie is privileged. She can't do any household chores, but she can read, and she helps the soldiers write home. Her struggle to give up comfort and protection and find true independence is the most moving part of a story seldom told. Hazel Rochman

A wonderful new Dear America book.

Twelve-year-old Lozette Moreau, called Zettie, has lived all her life since she was a baby in the French countryside as the companion to Marie-Louise Boyer, called Ree, daughter of a wealthy nobleman. Although she is still considered a slave, as Ree's companion she is treated well, able to read and write, and to speak French, Spanish, and English. But when Ree's father dies and her brother Pierre inherits everything, he loses the family fortune with his bad decisions. Now he is going to sell Zettie, and force Ree into marriage to a man she despises. Then Ree learns that her other brother Jacques, presumed dead in the war with the English, may be alive, and living with Indians in the Colonies. Ree and Zettie escape to Spain and then travel across the ocean to the New World, where they end up living at Fort Niagara. In her diary, Lozette describes their journey, their experiences at Fort Niagara at the end of the French and Indian War, and her own longing to be considered free.

I highly recommend this new book to all readers who love the Dear America series. I especially love Colonial American settings and I liked reading a different type of slavery story. Zettie was well treated but still longed to be a free person. It's a very unique book sure to be enjoyed by historical fiction fans.

Fantastic Commentary

Lozette Moreau is a pampered French slave, a "companion" to her mistress, and her life is one of ease and luxury. Her "work" consists of following her mistress to the opera, and practicing fencing with her, never manual labor under harsh conditions. She is never beaten or harmed, she is taken exceptionally good care of, her mistress loves her, and she is allowed to speak her mind as she sees fit. And yet, through all this, she is a slave. If her family needs money, or if her mistress tires of her, she can be sold at any moment, against her will, and uprooted. And though she is loved, as a slave she is never truly respected or treated as anything more than a human 'pet'.

Lozette longs for freedom. Throughout her adventures in America, she eloquently argues that she can never be a true friend to her "companion" unless her friendship is freely given and could be freely taken away. She argues that without the ability to refuse to be a companion, any "choice" she has to be a companion is meaningless and not true friendship. As her mistress searches for her lost brother and learns about life in America, outside of high society, she comes to respect both her own African slave and the American Indians she encounters in her travels. When she finds her lost brother married to an American Indian, she recognizes that they are much happier in America than in France, and she chooses to follow her brother's example - becoming a wife and a friend to people not of her own race.

This is a beautiful Dear America book and will touch the reader's heart. As Lozette struggles passionately for her freedom, we are caught up in the narrative as we pray that she will be successful and will win what so many were able to only dream of.

I have read the book Look to the Hills, the diary of a French slave girl. My recommendation for this book would be, to encourage people to read it. It is about a young lady named Lozette Moreau (Zettie for short). She is a slave to a young French lady named Marie-Louise Boyer (Ree for short). Ree's father purchased Zettie as a young girl to be a companion to Ree. At least that's what everybody tells Zettie, but she knows she is really just her slave. She goes wherever Ree goes, and does what ever Ree does. This book is mostly about the life of Zettie.

The year is 1763. The war between the French and the British is going on. Ree's bother is battling the British in America, to gain more land for the French. Ree's other brother could not fight in the war because he had and injured knee. Unfortunately Ree's brother had previously gambled money, and had lost his fathers whole fortune. This book tells a lot of historical facts. One example would be the fact that the French are fighting the British and many, many soldiers are getting killed. Zettie falls in love with one of Ree's friends that is very kind to her and is a true gentleman, Saint George. When Ree's brother arranges a marriage for Ree to get married to Jean-Paul. Ree and Zettie both go on a carriage to the French suburbs where he lives. But they are robbed secretly by Saint George so that Ree would not have to marry Jean-Paul. Ree decides to go and find her brother, which is in the war since her father has already died. Saint George helps them get to Spain to get closer to America to find her brother.They stay in an old friends house. But they do not treat Zettie very well. This book really showed me the way that a black woman really suffered in that time even if she did have an amazing owner that was kind to her.

so in other words I really recommend that you read this book. It actually inspired me to be more grateful and thankful that I live in this time period. It showed me that it was really tough back then and even if there were some nice masters, there were still some really tough ones too. For example when Zettie and Ree went to Spain, they lived in a house with an old friend of Ree. The woman who lived in there had absolutely no respect for Zettie and treated her like an animal. I hope that you read this book because it was wonderful to read, and I really enjoyed learning about the life of a French slave girl.

This book is great for beginner and non-beginner alike. Its modular approach not only takes the boredom out of memorization, but aids in retention of vocab and makes it easy for use as a reference guide. It's quite enjoyable. As good as they come!!!!

I have studied French for several years now, and I know most of the vocabulary included in this book. Despite that, I found useful the way in which it is divided, that is, in thematic categories, because those categories allow me to search for the specific vocabulary I need when I need it. That feature saves time and it is very practical. The task of learning new vocabulary can be quite tedious, but this book makes it more approachable, by allowing the reader to choose what themes he is going to study, and in what order.

I don't regret buying it, because I think it is a thoroughly useful reference book. Due to that, I recommend "Mastering French Vocabulary: A Thematic Approach" to you :)

Learned absolutely nothing on how to build a business

I was hoping to learn how to build a business as it says on the cover but it tells me nothing specific, just general stuff you can find on the web.
The book is simply their success story told, which I must say, I do admire but the title should have been "our success story", NOT "build a business from your kitchen table" as I haven't got a clue how to start building my business after reading it.
It is all extremely vague and doesn't tell you exactly what to do.

A great new addition to the angel/nephilim genre. Plus Nova is a butt kicker!

I do have a thing for urban fantasy books with angels. So when this book came up for review, I raised my hand to read it. I’m glad I did.

Nova is a human. Or should I say was a human. Out of a chance of fate, she was changed into nephilim, a being of angel and human descent. With the help from Ben, Zeph, Ransom, and other nephilim, they are trying to help her figure out how and why she is changing. What she doesn’t know is that there is another group of nephilim, Ibira Corp, who wants to study her to find out why she was able to be changed. Now she’s in a struggle for her life and freedom.

The story has a little sci-fi twist with genetics. While I normally suspend reality in urban fantasy/paranormal stories, the genetics gave it plausibility to it. The story was action packed. Plus we have nephilim with abilities! No two abilities are alike. We meet some interesting characters. There are people who can cure illness, take pain away, freeze you, fly, and be able to control you with their voice. There are many more, both interesting and terrifying. It had an X-men vibe to it. Nova was a great character. She is strong, smart and sassy. She’s a fighter. While the book did have some romance in it, it was light side. Ben is swoon worthy guy. His abilities have caused him to distance himself from others. Nova does an incredible job acquiring his trust and being patient for him.

Overall, the book is solid. It’s a new take on the angel genre. The end has a little cliff hanger, and the version I read had a sneak peek of the next book, Nephilim Code- Edward. I couldn’t help myself and had to read it. I will be signing up for updates for this series as well as pre-order the next book when available.

A great combination of action, humor, intrigue, good vs. evil, and a wee bit of romance

Nova Quinn is a smart, sassy, fearless young woman with her eye constantly searching for the perfect shot to be photographed. One night on the roof of her apartment, minding her own business with her camera in hand, she hears a disturbance and starts taking pictures. No way did she just see two men fly up into the air...What the heck just happened, and why is her strange but handsome new neighbor one of them that disappeared like a shot into the night sky?

Ever curious Nova sets out to meet her new neighbors to get answers. When a chance introduction with her roommate's new love interest makes her sick, only the new neighbors can help Nova deal with what is happening to her.

Zeph and Ben Angelis are brothers and Nephilim. Only other Nephilim can see each other's powers and abilities so why is it that Nova can see what they are? As in any society there are good and evil, having a human see what they are makes Nova dangerous and wanted. Her human side is dying and now they need to get to the bottom of what her new powers may be.

First off, we love stories involving Angels/Nephilim etc. Nova did not disappoint. There is a great combination of action, humor, intrigue, good vs. evil, and a wee bit of romance brewing through this easy to read and follow story. Nova is strong and fearless, Zeph and Ben (even Julius) are dreamy while each dealing with their powers differently. Every character we meet are well written and described without being overloaded with dialogue. We are super excited to continue this journey and pick up Book 2: Edward, when it is available. 4.5 Sighs

Cliffhanger

The story was good and I would give it a better rating but I have a few issues. It needs an editor, my grammar is not that great and even I picked up on this. I had no idea what country it was set in other than it was not the US until the very end when you find out she is returning to Melbourn. I think books that end in cliffhangers should have advanced warning. It is a cheap sales gimmic and I have no respect for authors who do this.

About the Author
Rigdzin Shikpo has spent more than fifty years studying and practicing Buddhism. When he met his principal teacher, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, in 1965, he had already trained with several Theravadan monks over the course of nine years and was closely associated with the Buddhist Society in London. He is the Dharma director of the Longchen Foundation, a community of Buddhist teachers and students practicing meditation in the Mahayana and Dzogchen traditions of Buddhism.

Francesca Fremantle is a scholar and translator of Sanskrit and Tibetan works of Hindu and Buddhist tantra, and was a student of Chogyam Trungpa for many years. Fremantle received her doctorate from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She is a teacher with the Longchen Foundation, established by Chogyam Trungpa and Dilgo Khyentse, and directed by Rigdzin Shikpo. She currently lives in London.

The Tibetan Buddhist's Digest

Rigdzin Shikpo (the former Michael Hookham) is my teacher's husband (Lama Shenpen Hookham or Dr. S.K. Hookham, the author of "The Buddha Within".) They are the Real McCoys: Western Buddhists and Dharma teachers of uncommon skill and scholarship. One a former Buddhist nun, the other a long-time Buddhist scholar and practitioner. They were both deeply influenced by the late Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who founded what is now Naropa University, the only accredited Buddhist-inspired university in North America. As was Pema Chodron.

This may seem like "Buddhism Lite" to some because of its lack of physical "heft. Don't let its size and accessibility fool you. Read it and re-read it and re-read it as it slowly grows on you. Things you miss the first time around will hit you like a big Aha the next time around.

If this is your introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, count your blessings.

this is probably the greatest introduction to buddhist thinking i have read. everything is laid out clearly and without religious or mystic overtones. a manual to self-improvement from an outstanding teacher. highly recommended!

Congratulations to Rigdzen Shikpo

I am not a practicing Buddhist. Having said this, Rigdzen Shikpo's introduction to Buddhism is one of the best I have read. It is based on a profound knowledge of the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and - more importantly - a development of the author's original insight.
