Fundamental tool

The CCPS Guidelines for Chemical Process Quantitative Risk Analysis is an essential resource for a safety engineer, while showing some signs of aging (it was published in 2000).
The book presents the main empirical relationships to quantify the phenomenon of release of chemicals (liquids, vapors, gases).
They also reported the methodologies, that have become classics, for the calculation of the anticipated effects of the explosions.
Unfortunately a particular limit, obvious to those who work with the European Directives ATEX, is related to the absence of tools to calculate the extent of the hazardous area especially in the near field (release Jet, pool, etc..).
Some of the tools available in excel CD allow you to avoid purchasing expensive software CFD, especially in simple cases of release.

Fantastic Book of Solar Projects

This has got to be one of the finest books I have encountered on making solar energy a real part of your daily life. I should explain that. The projects in this book are NOT just about using solar electric panels, though that is part of the book. No, half of the book describes "how-to" projects to built solar collectors to add heat to your house.

If you are looking for instructions on how to build a complete solar panel system for disconnecting from the grid, this ain't it. There is some practical knowledge of hooking up batteries, mounting panels, etc. But you need another book with more depth for that.

I'm not sure why the one reviewer felt that this book only provided pictures of completed solar projects. That isn't the case at all. There are, in fact, some very detailed instructions on cutting the wooden pieces for some of the projects, materials lists, etc. Pictures demonstrating how to mount the devices, etc. are also included. If you are not comfortable around a table saw, or have never built anything out of wood, then this is likely not for you.

These projects are important because these are not devices you can simply purchase on the internet: they are unique solar collection devices you must build yourself. But they are worth the trouble.

Excellent image to word book

I am impressed with this book. The photos work as visual instructions, material lists, projects and sraight DIY Solar Project book. I would highly recommend that you purchase "Solar Electricity Handbook 2012 Edition" by: Michael Boxwell to go along with this book. If you have these two books, you will be unstoppable in your Solar Power Projects and Knowledge. This book tells you specifically what you need for the projects included in it, but knowing the actual How does it do that is not to important for those specific projects, but if you need to make adjustments, what is safe, why you need to do it a certain way, how much solar power is needed and making changes to those projects will leave you scatching your head and with fear unless you have the other book. Safety is extremely important, producing enough energy for your project to work correctly and knowing why to much energy can damage your project will keep you from altering these projects unless you have the other book. These are both worthy of your money and both worth every dime.

Short on specifics

I am giving this book 2 stars because it doesn't address in sufficient detail how to actually choose components for a pv solar system. The book is more of a carpentry project book than pure solar.

I expected the book to contain more specifics about how to set up PV solar projects. There are a couple of projects in the book that involve PV but not nearly as many as a quick perusal would indicate. The book is filled with pictures of solar panels and the book does discuss the different types of panels. However, when you read about those projects there is no information on battery and charging capacity that might help you actually choose components for a system. Also, there are some basic mathematical relationships and conventions that would help one calculate the potential output and charging time of a system, once you have chosen components. Those are not included. To me, these are fatal flaws.

On the other hand, if you are interested in carpentry projects that use solar energy for heating and water applications then this book has good schematics and parts lists for how to execute such projects.

This engaging, introspective memoir, coauthored with Bruslaw ( The Business Writer's Handbook ) offers insight into the thinking and attitudes of a Wehrmacht officer. Knappe served in the artillery during the invasions of Czechoslovakia, France and the Soviet Union and as a staff officer during the Italian campaign and the defense of Berlin. Though he had moral reservations about the Czech campaign and was troubled by his government's betrayal of its non-aggression pact with Russia, Knappe believed that his participation in combat was honorable and that the overriding purpose of the war was to correct the injustice perpetrated against Germany by the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. Only after he was captured by Soviet troops in 1945 did he begin to understand that he had been an "unthinking cog," accepting without question Hitler's might-makes-right philosophy. The memoir closes with an account of his release from a Soviet prison camp in 1949 and his reunion with his family in Leipzig. Knappe came to America in 1955 and is now a retired corporate executive in Ohio. Photos.

Knappe's Wehrmacht career began in 1936. He participated in the final collapse of the Eastern Front, then spent more than four years as a Russian POW. Readers may doubt Knappe's insistence that he fought not for National Socialism but for Germany, but this mindset, common among his generation, cannot be dismissed out of hand as special pleading or selective memory. His memoir, based heavily on a wartime diary, shows a talented professional soldier and unreflective patriot who initially regarded Hitler as fulfilling legitimate German aspirations; by the time he began probing beneath the regime's surface, it was far too late to take action. Soldat makes a worthwhile companion to Hans von Luck's Panzer Commander ( LJ 10/15/89). Both works highlight an unresolved paradox: never did soldiers perform better in a worse cause than the men who served Adolf Hitler.

World War II from inside the Wehrmacht. Knappe, one of the Third Reich's best and brightest, trained under Rommel and distinguished himself rapidly, meeting the Fhrer as a young peacetime soldier. He lived and fought through most of the major campaigns (France, Russia, Italy, the defense of Berlin), cheating death time after time, surviving for nearly five years as a Russian prisoner. Here, aided by Brusaw (The Business Writer's Handbook--not reviewed), Knappe offers precise, affecting memories of the WW II era--of his family, his circle, and a Jewish friend who had to leave Germany; of the way people lived in different places he was billeted, and of the textures of his life: the Russian winter and the hell of combat are palpable. No everyman, Knappe comes off as sensitive as well as dutiful, and remorseless in his respect for his own life. Yet the self-deceptions of nationalism and war appear in justifying asides here and there. He was bothered by the use of children in the war, he tells us, but outraged when a teenaged leader failed to report that they had fled their position, and he was nonplussed by a Russian woman who thought Fascism would be as bad as Communism. His memoir displays an unnerving acceptance of an establishment: There is no hint of civil disobedience. Knappe was disturbed about the treatment of Jews and wondered, ``Why invade Russian when we have a treaty?''- -but his ethic of discipline did not allow him the initiative of those who plotted to kill Hitler. Withal, a superb description of the German war machine from creation to defeat, and a fine, absorbing chronicle of a remarkable time. A true gem of WW2 literature.

Ever since I first picked up a copy of this book, I've loved it so much that I think I've read the thing at least 4 times!

Soldat is a book that chronicles the recollections of a German named Siegfried Knapp, an ordinary boy caught up in WW2 Germany. While there are many books out there about WW2 in general and the Germans in particular, Soldat is remarkable in that its story is told from Knapp's perspective and on a very personal level. While reading, one gets a real sense of being `in the trenches', as Knapp details very vividly his experiences from basic training and artillery school (with some very memorable parts), through to the officer's academy and on to service on multiple fronts. The culmination of his service was the battle for Berlin, and his subsequent imprisonment by the Soviets is also covered.

What sets Soldat apart from other books on the subject matter is that the focus is on what directly relates to Knapp; there are no discussions about grand strategy or the motivations behind Hitler's invasion of the U.S.S.R. Instead, the reader is treated to a glimpse of life from inside the German army and German society, from someone who experienced it directly.

Overall, this book is definitely recommended for those wanting a more in-depth look at the German army from a true ground up and personal perspective. Those looking for Sven Hassel-esque action or Osprey-style discussions on strategy may be disappointed though and should look elsewhere.

An outstanding personal memoir of the life and thoughts of Siegfried Knappe's time in one of history's most tumultuous periods. Very believable,and well written - initially ordered this title in paperback,and now reordered an additional hardcover for my military library,a welcome addition.

Orphaned at birth, T. Baggins was raised by wolves until age fourteen, when the pack moved on one night without a forwarding address. A fine and painful relevation

Gabriel MacKenna is a hard man. Sentenced to life in prison for a double murder, he is determined to be nobody's boy. He will do whatever is necessary to protect himself; no man will force him into a homosexual act, and he will yield to no one. In 1931 England, prison is a hard reality. And Gabriel will be the hardest man there.

Dr. Joseph Cooper enters Wentworth Prison sentenced for a mistake. A God awful mistake. Killing a woman and her unborn baby. He walks into prison with his head held high, innocent, not knowing the danger all around him. Young, handsome, and very vulnerable.

When Gabriel sees Joey, he decides he needs punishing, and as had man at Wentworth, he is just the man to do it. So when Joey enters the showers, Gabriel follows and takes what he wants, leaving Joey a broken, bloody, raped mess. And then adds insult to injury and becomes his cellmate.

Joey would rather die than face rape again. And tells Gabriel so. And then tells him his story. What got him in prison, what destroyed his life. All men in prison are innocent - it is the oldest story in the book. But something...touches Gabriel and changes his mind. He desires Joey, like he has never desired anything in his life. But he will not take it. He will protect him, but not force. Not again.

As time passes, the two forge a truce of sorts. But will Joey ever forgive Gabriel? hat drove Gabriel to commit the murders that have him in prison? And what kind of future is there for these two men in the life in which they are trapped?

This book, this stunning, harsh, broken heart of a book, took me to places I did not want to go, showed me things I did not want to see, but then Then it taunted me with hope and love and redemption and pain and heartbreak. And damn it, I wanted it. I wanted these two men to have a future, against the odds and the circumstances and the realities. I wanted like they wanted.

"But because in this place where he'd lost so much, when nearly every comfort had been taken away, he alone had the power to forgive Gabriel. And with the realization of his power came the sweet temptation to use it."

Power where least expected. Love and romance where most dangerous. Where can it all lead? Somewhere bittersweet, somewhere fine, somewhere terrible.

Well done shades of grey.

I bought this story on the strength of the 1st story I read by this author Something Different This story has the same depth of characters. What I really like is how well the shades of grey are done. There is no black and white. No one in the story is completely innocent. Either by action or inaction they have caused harm. The start between our characters is very rocky and there are mixed emotions and pragmatism to begin that gradually builds to respect and love. The setting has a lot of danger to it. So you don't know what will happen when the intelligent main character loses some control and tells a guard some uncomfortable truths about himself. You end up caring about these faulty characters. Plus unlike many other stories in the m/m genre this is better written, longer and cheaper. Recommended.

A truly fantastic historical and erotic experience

One of the things I really admire about Reid's writing is her ability to make the reader feel feral love for fallible people. In Protection, she earned my undying love of Gabriel, Joey, Lonnie, and even McGrory by sucking me in from the get-go with clean-as-a-whistle prose and a captivating point of view in the form of McKenna, a man who starts with negative respect points and grows into a man I wept for. As a love story between men, Protection is almost flawless, the chemistry between Michael and Joey resonating as authentic to these queer eyes; not too flowery, not to sentimental, but real, sometimes painful, and always charged. Finally, the book stands up to its test of time and place; Reid tells her story with painstaking attention to historical detail and finds a way for the characters and the circumstances to mesh into her desired conclusion that is perfectly crafted, but not in the Ian McEwan, contrived sort of way.

All in all, a roaring good read, and one of my all-time favorite novels. This one's an author to watch!

Not Unexpected From Albee

These plays are drenched in the condemnation that we've come to expect from Edward Albee. "The Sandbox" condemns his parents (his mother was more recently condemned in "Three Tall Women"), "The Death of Bessie Smith" condemns the white establishment of the South in the pre-Civil Rights Movement days, and "Fam and Yam" condemns the old order in literature. Albee's world is soaked in doom and filled twice over in hatred for the established order. The only fault is the same one that's been brought against Bob Dylan and Sam Peckinpah -- if the establishment had to go, what's going to replace it?
