comprehensive introduction to SPSS

SPSS is quite a powerful statistical package. If you have never used it, or any other stats package for that matter, then George and Mallery offer a comprehensive introduction to both SPSS and statistics.

The book emphasises what you can do at the graphical level, with the SPSS user interface. Myriad screen captures of menu options, panels and the like. These are given in the context of many tasks that you can do. You should also look at the graphing capabilities. In statistics, visualisation is often necessary, in order to understand the data.

As far as statistical theory goes, what is here is really a summary. There is no attempt at proving theorems, for example. But where SPSS shines is in making easily available lots of functions that can be applied to your data. Quicker than you having to code this in some other language.

The book does not touch on more advanced and specialised packages available within SPSS. For these, you might look up Norusis' texts. She has written several that are definitive expositions. Another possibility is to look up Using SPSS for Windows and Macintosh: Analyzing and Understanding Data (5th Edition). The presentation in the latter is somewhat like this book, but a little more advanced.

I purchased this book to use with my adult students. My students are learning to read. Many of them have never studied the American Revolution. They didn't know that women fought in the war with the men. It was a good way to reinforce some reading skills in an interesting format.

Still Robinson, but ...

Kim Stanley Robinson is a phenomenal writer, but here he's tried to do the impossible: portray the story of catastrophic global warming largely through a handful of deeply realized characters. In some respects, it seems as though he slights the most important character--the Earth. His gift for creating characters has not deserted him, nor his ability to write engaging prose that draws the reader in--40 Signs of Rain is a truly enjoyable book to read despite its flaws. It's just that using a global disaster as the starting point for a meditation on the nature of science and the American political system doesn't work. If you like Robinson, or you like finely drawn characters, go for it--you won't be disappointed. If you're looking for a novel (or trilogy) that truly captures the magnitude of catastrophic climate change, I regret to say this isn't it.

If you like this book: you're likely to enjoy most of the Robinson canon (my personal favorite is Pacific Edge, but the Mars books are also absorbing).

Climate Change Here Now

No one can write this stuff like Robinson. Forty Signs of Rain begins a new trilogy about abrupt climate change. In the book (as in the real world) this is not some vague worry for the future, but something that is going on all around us right now, just waiting for a trigger event before things get really bad. In Forty Signs of Rain, the characters are real people living real lives. They respond to political, environmental, and domestic pressures that are identical to those we all witness every day, so Robinson's plot is very real and tangible throughout.

Don't expect Hollywood disaster themes in this book, climate change isn't working that way. Rather, the characters get on with their lives and struggles while subtle hints of what's to come appear here and there. Throughout the book, the science is rock solid. The only criticism I have is that this is the first Robinson I have read in which the opening book clearly requires a sequel. Forty Signs of Rain does not stand alone unless your expectations are very low. Normally I resent this from authors and publishers, but Robinson is too good at what he writes; I will give him a break.

Vapid, Shallow

Science fiction has a reputation for being shallow. Even some of its most famous writers such as Asimov wrote books whose principal interest lay in the technological view of the future. In Forty Signs of Rain Robinson has managed to convolve shallow writing, a set of not very empathetic and unfocused characters, and a plot that plods rather tediously to a climax that makes the middle inning stretch of a baseball game seem nail-biting in comparison. And I am not a baseball fan.

I do give Robinson an extra star for trying to bring a little more attention to the risks associated with global warming, but given the current political landscape, I'd say he underestimated the size of the fictional devastation that would be required to change national policy by a factor of 100 or 1000. Such a catastrophe might be farther out on the time horizon, but it is not out of the question. So the book strikes me as a lost opportunity. The next guy who tries to write a Sci-Fi book on the subject will get turned down because 'It's been done and it didn't work." Too bad for all of us.

Although some of the material is old news (women require more foreplay and affection than men), much is cutting-edge. For example, women don't always desire orgasm, and therefore "quickies" can be enjoyable for both parties. But sorely lacking here is a discussion of safe sex in the age of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. There is not much left to the imagination as Gray explains exactly what men and women should say and not say, what they should do, touch, lick, and more. As in his earlier books, Gray's metaphors lack grace, and his writing is far from polished. If you can see past his silly language, however, much of his advice is quite good. Although the explicitness of his sexual descriptions may bother some, and his poor writing skills may bother others, Gray's book is a reasonable and useful title. And given his huge popularity, public libraries should have this on their shelves when he starts appearing on the talk shows. Gray's What Your Mother Couldn't Tell You & Your Father Didn't Know (1994) failed to match the success of its predecessor, the megaselling Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus (1992), so this time out, Gray titles his offering seemingly in hopes of stimulating brand-name recognition and, hence, consumer loyalty. Still, the antinomy of Mars and Venus, of masculine aggression and feminine absorption, of masculine flame and feminine smoldering, is apt when discussing the differences in men's and women's sexual response that underlie all Gray's advice on sustaining satisfying sexual relations. Also underlying his counsel, and making this guide different from many others as well as appealing to the new moral conservatism of the 1990s, are his endorsement of monogamy and his repeated assertion that "great sex is God's gift." In accordance with those emphases, Gray writes not so much of the "mechanics of sex" as of the "mechanics of making sure you have sex," and his chapters bear titles such as "The Joy of Quickies" and "How to Rekindle the Passion" as well as the more expected "How to Drive a Woman Wild with Pleasure." Good Sex Is Just A Book Away...

Sex is a subject that is not often talked about among couples. Unfortunately, it is also an area that accounts for a large chunk of divorces. Women expect men to be mind-readers, intuitively knowing just what to do to bring them pleasure. Men assume that they should know what to do already, as if males are born as sex experts. (Not!) What often results is great expectations met with disppointment, and thwarted, hit-and-miss attempts at intimacy and sexual fulfillment.
With this book by Dr. John Gray, sex doesn't have to be a frustrating and hurtful guessing game. Gray explores areas such as sexual versus emotional fulfillment, taking responsibility for your own pleasure, how to increase desire and rekindle passion, a women's need to relax, the joy of quickies, passionate monogamy, and home-cooked sex versus gourmet sex. Both men and women are given maps into the murky terrain of the other's attitudes and expectations about sex, which will no doubt result in a sigh of relief by many. At last, someone understands! While providing accurate maps, though, Gray acknowledges that every person (especially women!) are unique, and as such, have unique desires, likes, and dislikes.
When discussing giving a man positive direction, Gray points out that some women do not realize a man's sensivitity in this area. Men want to please their women, so certain comments can feel like rejection to a man, which will bring an instant chill to intimacy. Here are 10 sexual turnoffs outlined by Gray:
1. "You're not doing it right."
2. "I don't like that."
3. "Ouch! That hurts!"
4. "Don't touch me like that."
5. "That tickles."
6. "Not like that."
7. "Not yet."
8. "Not there."
9. "I'm not ready."
10. "What are you doing?"
Gray then goes on to explain why a man shuts down, how to give positive feedback and re-direction, and 20 sexual turn on phrases.
The Chapter titled How To Drive a Women Wild With Pleasure provides men with some excellent practical advice on how a woman ticks, and how to rev up her engine. Gray advises:
"A man needs to remember that to increase a woman's pleasure, he needs to delay direct stimulation. Certain ancient temples are dedicated to the female aspect of God. According to one ritual associated with these temples, you have to circumambulate the temple three times before entering it. This same principle to loving and adoring a woman during sex."
One of the most practical parts of this book is that it contains drawings. Yes, drawings. How do you expect to know where to put what? Seriously, though, it's important to know about anatomy to understand what may bring a man or woman pleasure.
Gray understands the pressures that many couples face, and explains why many are having less sex. He also explains why men are like the sun, and women are like the moon. (A very helpful analogy!)
The "voice" of this book is very understanding and encouraging, coaxing men and women to re-discover the joy and pleasure of intimacy and sex. Rather than going without, or relegating yourself to frustration and disappointment with regards to sex, why not pick up this book (or something like it) and make the decision to enjoy your sexuality? It is my belief that we are given these bodies to enjoy, and the delight of sexual intimacy with our mate is a part of that. (I mean, if God didn't intend women to enjoy sex, then why give her a clitoris!)
Ignorance is *not* bliss when it comes to mutual sexual fulfillment. If you're frustrated or have given up on a satisfying sex life, take heart: this book gives great information, encouragement, and hope.

Mars and Venus in the Bedroom: You Have to Have This Book!

I've been married to the same person for 28 years and always thought our sex life was great, but when we read this book (yes, we both read it) we realised how much we still didn't know, hadn't tried, and hadn't communicated about. This book has enhanced an already great relationship - just think what it could do for one in trouble! This is written plainly, interestingly, and is very accurate - from both the woman's and the man's point of view. There were a couple of things that seemed corny to me, but may not seem that way to someone who is 20 years younger than me (I'm 48). Buy this book! I guarantee you will get at least one insight into sex that will help your love life, no matter how wise you think you already are!

Great for laughs

I got it,
and it has lots of great advice! I would recommend that it be read with a lard chunk of salt (in some sections).
A couple of things made me LMAO and I had to share.
1. He devotes 1 1/2 pages in telling a man how to deliver oral sex to a woman. And not very well either. He mentions the G-spot, but basically says "It would create preformance anxiety in the man if he kept trying to find it---so he won't get too technical" so he leaves it at that.
Excuse me! I nearly dropped the book at this point (like, he could have devoted 10 pages to that alone).
2. HOWEVER, he devotes 5 plus pages!!! on giving oral to a guy! Going into extreme, intricate detail of every millimeter of area to be covered.
In reading this, there is no doubt about Dr. Gray's gender.
His justification? Men like it better than women (erm, excuse me?! Was I asked???)
3. He does this lingerie=mood chart that had me falling out of bed "If she is wearing black lace, it means she is in this kinda mood, if she is wearing white, it means she feels virginal, if she is in pink, it means she feels romantic."
Again, WHAT? How about I look pretty dang good in black lack, the pink doesn't scratch and the white doesn't ride up. Maybe he is color blind.
4. Oy, and don't get me started in the section about Quickies (I do agree to some point, but the reciprocal part isn't fair, balanced). Cuddles for a quickie? Where did he find these people! It came off as extremely cold blooded, with the woman lying there like a log being perfectly OK to the hubby (argh!) That alone would be a 'he needed a killin'' defense in a murder trial.
All that aside, it does have some helpful pointers. Buy the book used....and cheap.

About the Author
"Terry and Gerry Audesirk" grew up in New Jersey, where they met as undergraduates. After marrying in 1970, they moved to California, where Terry earned her doctorate in marine ecology at the University of Southern California and Gerry earned his doctorate in neurobiology at the California Institute of Technology. As postdoctoral students at the University of Washington's marine laboratories, they worked together on the neural bases of behavior, using a marine mollusk as a model system. Terry and Gerry are now professors of biology at the University of Colorado at Denver, where they have taught introductory biology and neurobiology since 1982. In their research lab, funded by the National Institutes of Health, they investigate the mechanisms by which neurons are harmed by low levels of environmental pollutants. Terry and Gerry share a deep appreciation of nature and of the outdoors. They enjoy hiking in the Rockies, running near their home in the foothills west of Denver, and attempting to garden at 7000 feet in the presence of hungry deer and elk. They are long-time members of many conservation organizations. Their daughter, Heather, has added another focus to their lives. "Bruce E. Byers," a midwesterner transplanted to the hills of western Massachusetts, is a professor in the biology department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He's been a member of the faculty at UMass (where he also completed his doctoral degree) since 1993. Bruce teaches introductory biology courses for both nonmajors and majors; he also teaches courses in ornithology and animal behavior. A lifelong fascination with birds ultimately led Bruce to scientific exploration of avian biology. His currentresearch focuses on the behavioral ecology of birds, especially on the function and evolution of the vocal signals that birds use to communicate. The pursuit of vocalizations often takes Bruce outdoors, where he can be found before dawn, tape recorder in hand, awaiting the first songs of a new day.

Great Textbook and Future Resource

I bought this textbook for an Intro to Child Development online and I have found it highly useful. Since I'm in an online course the majority of the instruction comes from this book, and I find it to be thorough. I am planning on becoming a teacher, so I am going to keep this book to help me understand what stages of development my students are in, as well as to study for the Praxis.

This book was cheaper than the actual paperback and came with the code to use my development lab along with it. The development lab really makes a difference in getting the important information out of the book. It also offers movies to help see the points.
