About the Author
Rachel Ruff is an award-winning CNN producer turned ad-agency executive. Ruff served as the Vice President of Porter Novelli in Washington, DC, where she used her media industry insight and extensive CNN experience to oversee digital media and broadcast media projects. Rachel Ruff managed and produced the Dr. Sanjay Gupta Primetime documentaries at CNN and created segments related to food and health for the CNN American Morning show. She earned the honor of being the youngest producer for the network in 1997 and produced the first-ever World Aids Day documentary in 2004. Rachel graduated from the University of Florida with a communications degree and a pre-med concentration and holds a Pastry Arts degree with Honors from L Academie De Cuisine in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She completed an externship working for White House chefs Anne Amernick and Frank Ruta. In the spring of 2013, her original salmon recipe was published by Penguin in the Pike Place Fish Guys cookbook, the dish earned placement as a cover photo. Not just an entertaining memoir...

The author writes with a charming candor that makes you want to be her a friend within the first few pages. The book discusses a few subject matters I was interested in, and as an avid consumer of memoirs, it's important for me as a reader, to hear the author's authentic voice. Ruff's clarity and self-depricating humor affirm she pulled no punches in telling this story. This book is not just an entertaining memoir, but is also a useful guide for auditing one's own social media habits for signs of dependancy.

Colorful characters but a weak mystery

Edith Rivett, who wrote this book under the pseudonym E. C. R. Lorac was a prolific mystery author in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. She has a highly artificial style. Each book opens with a wildly melodramatic murder. There is an inventive but improbable investigation by police (usually as in this one by Chief Inspector Robert Macdonald assisted by Detective Inspector Reeves). The reader is treated to obviously telegraphed clues, which are often repeated for emphasis. The murderer is captured or killed, and someone explains the overelaborate plot to one of the slower characters.

The best parts of the books are the colorful, if not very credible, cast of characters. This one includes a sharp-tongued octogenarian housekeeper, a fussy historical expert, an extroverted antiques dealer, a charming rogue actor, a talented illusionist couple and many others. Even some of the minor characters are memorable.

The mysteries are usually unsatisfying. The spectacular features which make the crimes unusual or puzzling seldom figure into the conclusion. In this one, as in many of her books, they are entirely unexplained. She will often invent information for her solution that was not given to the reader, in this one she pulls out a fictitious scientific fact. Her solutions often have holes, this one requires the reader to accept a number of extremely improbable coincidences, on top of the psychotically overcomplicated murder plot. In fact, this actually follows the conventions of a manor house mystery, in which the isolated house limits the pool of suspects to a small, well-defined group. However the mystery is set in the middle of London, so there is no reason to concentrate on the small group.

The story is set in London, in November 1944. Surprisingly for a book published in 1945 it gets a lot of facts wrong. For example, by November 1944 only rockets were falling on London, the air raids described in the book ended in May 1941 (there were some air raids from January to May 1944, but they did not achieve the level of devastation described in the book). The book does describe accurately the difficulty of navigating in blacked-out London, but not the strict rationing. The police procedure is entirely fictional. Whenever a scene requires details about London at the time, the author skips quickly over it with generalities. Edith Rivett was evacuated from London for the war, and presumably relied upon some dated and incomplete second-hand reports.

Today this book has mainly historical interest, but some readers may find it worthwhile for the parade of characters.

Murder in Wartime London

Edith Caroline Rivett, aka ECR Lorac (Lorac is Carol spelled backwards in case you didn't notice) takes us on a journey to London in November 1944. Air raids are common and it is during a late night blackout that murder most foul occurs in a London park. A stranger walking along stops to light a cigarette and in the illumination of his match, another stranger standing behind him appears and it's curtains for the cigarette smoker (see....all those doctors were right, smoking can kill you!). The dead fellow is one John Ward, a mysterious chap whose real name may or may not be Timothy O'Farrel. Enter Inspector McDonald ( a fixture in the numerous mysteries written by Ms Lorac) who sifts through the clues, and of course gives us the solution. This is a brief novel, coming in at under 200 pages, making it a quick read. However, the trade off is the lack of any character development and some very skimpy background information that would help understand the suspects as well as the investigators. The solution is simple, but somewhat surprising. I would not necessarily classify this as a "fair play" mystery because the reader does not have all the information to formulate a solution, some of that is held back and revealed after the murderer is "unmasked" (you'll understand why I have that in quotes after you've read the book). This is a pretty good, satisfying book written during the Golden Age of mystery writing by a prolific writer whose many books are somewhat difficult to obtain these days.

Hoping the cool air will alleviate his pensiveness

Murder by Matchlight is a fascinating and challenging mystery set in Word War II London.

A murder that seems rather impossible. Competent and methodical police detectives. A wide variety suspects and people of interest, including magicians, doctors, historians, out-of-work snoops and a commando. All set among bombing runs and the blackout.

On an inky November night of compulsory blackout in wartime London, a chemist takes an impromptu jaunt through the park after hearing news that his lady is unable to attend their dinner meeting. Hoping the cool air will alleviate his pensiveness, he sits for a while to think when bizarre events commence.

The setting is thoroughly connected to the where, when, why and how of the mystery, and quite nicely rounds out the characters of all involved. Detective Macdonald capably takes facts and people in hand with no bravado or eccentricity. Overall, an enjoyable read with no weak points.

Hope against dispair

When one has deep faith, one knows that we will meet the people we have lost here on earth. But still, the loss can hurt and split the heart and spirit to where doubts about any meeting will loom. This book offers a release from those doubts and engenders hope that even though we have lost this person here on earth, they are never lost, just hidden from us temporarily until we will meet them again. God is so merciful to grant us this precious hope. This book is a little gem to help us understand heaven and that we have not forgotten or have been forgotten by the person who had to leave us.

Informative but dull

This book is very thorough--it covers every perspective and is fairly objective. However, it is very difficult to sit and read through. My attention was very easily diverted and after I finished, I couldn't remember it well enough to write my essays.

I bought this book recently along with some other McCauley titles, and this is the Cherry on the Sundae. It was much shorter than I expected, but repeats the paranoid anti-Soviet, Russophobic mantra of the other McCauley volumes.
This was the most boring of them, though. I admit to only having had the endurance of reading half the book.

I have three month old twins and was looking for an in depth guide to sleep training them. This book is not that guide. It provided useful information about the importance of sleep for babies, the need to recognize tired cues before babies are over tired and helped me to realize that many times when I thought my babies were just fussing for the sake of it they were tired and not as able to put themselves to sleep in midst of everything as they were at two months old. However the book was severely lacking in practical information in how to actually sleep train babies- and no trouble shooting for twin issues. I know they're supposed to go to sleep early, but what if one goes down and the other is up for two more hours, do I wake the late fall-asleeper when the early sleeper gets up in the morning? If one is showing tired cues long before the other at nap time, how do I get the not sleepy one to go down too? If one sleeps a six hour chunk and the other cannot surpass four hours, should I be waking the long sleeper to keep them on schedule?
I finished the book in three days and still have no idea how to get my twins sleeping on the same schedule or how to trouble shoot twin specific sleeping issues.
He does address issues related to advanced maternal age, prematurity and health issues related to prematurity. Perhaps I need to also read the original book (as some other posters have suggested). Though it seems cheap to leave information out of this book to force twin parents to buy the original book as well- we have to buy two of enough baby items!
I do give the book two stars because I like his approach- sleep begets sleep and well rested babies are happier. I just wish I knew how to implement.

Healthy Sleep Habits made my kids Happy

The follow-up Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Twins is a good resource to a parent of twins, offering practical advice for handling your multiples with a nice balance of confidence and humility.

I had a singleton first, and we used the Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child book to sleep train her. (Sleep train is a harsh description as it invokes images of a screaming baby and stressed parents but this is NOT how I'd describe this method) Because I had previous experience with the Weissbluth method we had an advantage in sleep training our twins. I found while the twins' book offered some practical detail about twinfants, and dealing with common concerns related to prematurity, it lacked the detail of its predecessor, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.

The Weissbluth method focuses almost entirely on the premise that rested babies sleep better. You need to toss out the age old notion that if you keep your baby up, they will sleep longer and better at night. This simply is an old wives tale not unlike putting cereal in your infant's bottle. Weissbluth focuses on preventing bad habits from starting and getting your baby down in their crib sleepy but awake and allowing them to drift off to sleep by themselves. I was skeptical at first, particularly because he says that babies can't comfortably stay awake for more than 90 minutes. BUT ITS TRUE, after 90 minutes all of my children reach a state of irritability, where they seem to want to nurse and be cuddled. With my first child I mistook this cue to mean that she was hungry. I was nursing her every 90 minutes when I should have been napping her.

All in all I HIGHLY recommend the Healthy Sleep Habits method, but I suggest the parent of multiples buy the original book, Happy Child, and skip Happy Twins. It just didn't have the detail and step by step instructions like Happy Child had and I still use my Happy Child book as quick reference when one of the kids hits a funny sleeping stage.

- Yes, my twins shared a crib until they started moving around. They tended to snuggle close together so I had to put a barrier between them in the crib to reduce the risk of SIDS and them accidentally smothering each other.
- I put them in separate cribs in the same room at 5 months.
- They really do ignore each other. One does not wake the other when they cry in the middle of the night
- When one wakes for a night feeding we always woke up the other one and fed them too to keep them on the same schedule.
- We keep their room at about 65 degrees
- We give them a bath every night before bed but instead of trying to wrangle the baby tub we bought the 2 of the spongy things and put them in the regular bath tub. It is faster and they like the water.

This book has saved our sanity! One of our twins was sleeping decently well, but the other one at 4 months of age was still waking up every 1 to 2 hours at night to be held or fed. Once the babies turned 5 months old, we started the sleep training, and WOW, what a difference! We are in the third week of it, and after the first few nights, they were only getting up one or two times in a 12 hour period to eat. That is what they are still doing, but they are not even 6 months old yet. It has helped with daytime naps, too. This book has also been super helpful to me in getting our twins on the same feeding and sleeping schedule. Before, they had their own separate schedules, and I would jokingly say to friends that it was like having one baby that never slept! Now our twins are mostly on the same schedule and it is so much better on us!!

Solid, excellent teaching

I still own this and refer back to it often several years after my purchase. I find it to be the best place to start after Redemptive Gifts for individuals. Healing and restoring relationships within the family is where we need to begin so we can be growing to where Father God is leading us. This is a most excellent resource for that. Helping us to understand where our attitudes have led us to be wandering is vital.
