About the Author
PROF. HOSSEIN ASKARI received a B.S. in CivilEngineering, Ph.D. in Economics and attendedthe Sloan School of Management at theMassachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Hewas an instructor of Economics at MIT, AssistantProfessor of Economics at Tufts University,Associate Professor of Economics at Wayne State University, Associate Professor and Professor of International Business and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin and is now the Iran Professor of International Business and Professor of International Affairs at the George Washington University. He served for two and a half years on the Executive Board of the IMF and was Special Advisor to the Minister of Finance of Saudi Arabia. In the mid-1980s he was the director of a multinational team that developed the first energy plan and energy planning models for Saudi Arabia. He has written extensively on economic development in the Middle East, international trade and finance, agricultural economics, oil economics, and on economic sanctions. He has been an advisor to a number of governments,institutions and corporations.

DR. ZAMIR IQBAL works as Lead Investment Officer with the Quantitative Strategies, Risk and Analytics department in the Treasury of the World Bank in Washington, D.C. He earned his Ph. D.in international finance from the George Washington University, where he also serves as adjunct faculty of international finance. He has published several articles on Islamic finance in journals of repute and has presented papers at international forums. He has extensive experience with capital markets, structured products, risk management, financial sector development, and financial modeling.His research interests include Islamic Finance, Financial Engineering,Structured Finance and International Banking. He is co-author of Introduction to Islamic Finance: Theory and Practice (2007) and Risk Analysis for Islamic Banks (2007).

DR. ABBAS MIRAKHOR, born in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, attended Kansas State University, where he received his Ph. D. in economics in 1969. From 1969 to 1984, he taught in various universities in the U.S. and Iran. From1984 until 1990, he served on the staff of thief, and from 1990 to 2008, he served as the Executive Director for Afghanistan, Algeria, Ghana, Islamic Republic of Iran, Morocco, Pakistan, and Tunisia on the Executive Board of the IMF. Dr. Mirakhor is the co-author of Essays on Iqtisad: Islamic Approach to Economic Problems (1989), Theoretical Studies in Islamic Banking and Finance (1987), and Introduction to Islamic Finance: Theory and Practice (2007). He has received several awards including “Order of Companion of Volta” for service to Ghana, conferred by the President of Ghana in 2005; Islamic Development Bank Annual Prize for Research in Islamic Economics, shared with Mushin Khan in2003, and “Quaid-e Azam” star for service to Pakistan, conferred by the President of Pakistan in 1997.

A great read, if you want to learn something about the crusades and be thoroughly entertained while doing so....

This is a superb, utterly entertaining, thought-provoking, at times (rightly) disturbing, and thoroughly illuminating account of the First Crusade. It is written by an eminent historian, who has gone back to the primary sources and re-narrated the events of 1095 to 1099, when something on the order of 100,000 Christians marched across Europe, through Byzantium, Anatolia, and down to Palestine to retake the holy city of Jerusalem from Muslim control. Though eminently scholarly, it is pitched to a non-academic audience. Rubenstein tells a wonderful story and, although specialists will be able to identify his arguments and his engagement with historiographical disputes, his narrative is free of the kind of inside-baseball argumentation that can sometimes muddy the overall picture. And for those of us who already knew the story going in, the book shares wonderful individual interpretive insights (see for instance the story of the nun who sought pardon after having married a Muslim, pp. 114-115), as well as a vast number of large-scale reinterpretations. Among these are the solid focus on the importance of the crusaders' own apocalyptic thinking, the relative evaluation of the types of violence the crusaders deployed, and the competing visions of crusade ideology that animated the events of, especially, 1098 and 1099. This is a masterpiece.

Jay Rubenstein has written an extraordinary, beautiful book about the First Crusade. I asked him to talk about the Crusades and their impact on the world today.
Q: "You once said that after the Crusades, everything was different. What did you mean by that?"
Rubenstein: "The First Crusade is like the end of the Cold War or the French Revolution. It's one of those moments in history that is truly transformative. After the Crusades, warfare became a large-scale enterprise and it was much more brutal. Atrocities happen in a territorial war, but in ideological warfare, atrocities happen as a matter of principle. In an ironic way, the Crusade also created a sense of shared achievement among the people back home. When the First Crusade was celebrated back home, people said, Look what we've done! The Crusade also helped to define Europe as a common people, a common culture--Christendom--in opposition to everything that was Eastern. Christendom would spread out and take over the world, in a Fukuyama-like sense, bringing an end to history. The Crusade was also an apocalyptic event. Before the First Crusade, the standard interpretation of the Apocalypse was that it would come and there was nothing anyone could do to affect it. God would work his will. The Crusade, however, created among contemporary historians and theologians the notion that humans could activate God's plan. History was no longer just one event following another. Instead, history was leading to the Apocalypse, and we had the capacity to bring it about."

Rubenstein: "Initially, I don't think Muslims took a lot of notice. To them, the Crusaders were just another frontier army, one more piece on the Middle East game board. Eventually, and to their surprise, however, they saw the Crusaders as religious fanatics intent on conquering Jerusalem. The long-term impact was that the Crusades reinvented the concept of the jihad in the Muslim world. Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders in 1099. Beginning around 1130 or 1140, Muslim leaders adopted the rhetoric of the holy war as an ideological rallying point, much as the Crusaders had. Saladin, the great Muslim leader, effectively used jihad to almost wipe out the Crusader states that had grown up in the century after the First Crusade."
"Today, the impact of the Crusades is more obvious, especially considering the establishment of Israel in 1948 and the 1967 War. The '67 War was fought over the same territories as the Crusades were. From the typical American perspective, Israel was returning to the Promised Land. From the Arab perspective, the Jews were the new Crusaders, occupying what had been Muslim or Arab territory for 1,800 years. Whether it's right or wrong, it's just hard to avoid the comparison today.
Q: "You referred earlier to Francis Fukuyama's The End of History and the Last Man. In his more recent book, The Origins of Political Order, Fukuyama assumes that humans have progressed. And, clearly, we have progressed, especially technologically. We're healthier and have a higher standard of living. We don't eat each other anymore, and for the most part those of us in the West no longer enslave one another. But the 20th century was a grim period for the West. The level of slaughter was horripilating. Are we wiser? Are we more morally advanced? Have we gained any ground ethically and spiritually since the Crusades?"
Rubenstein: "We have more information, and while we're not dying wholesale as we did in the past, we are killing wholesale. My professor in college would make the compelling argument that there was no Holocaust during the Middle Ages, no genocide, no atomic bomb, no apartheid, and that we have regressed since then. I'm not as comfortable with that argument today after having researched the underbelly of the Middle Ages. Crusaders committed horrific crimes against the Jews, for instance, although nothing on the scale of what we have done in the modern world."
Q: "If the Crusaders had today's technology, would their crimes have been just as brutal?"
Rubenstein: "Oh, yes. One of the themes of my work has been that the Crusades were genuinely horrific. They weren't business as usual. They weren't about acquiring territory or increasing wealth--although some crusaders did fight with those motives. The ideological basis of the Crusades was to purify the land of unbelief, not to exploit its resources. It's an ideology that justifies genocide."

The crusades were some of the most violent causes ever fought. This pilgrimage to the Holy Land became a bloody siege that nearly brought forth its own apocalyptic consequences.
Armies of Heaven by Jay Rubenstein breaks down the ins and outs of the first crusade and the four gory years that followed. The book starts with a short introduction to sum up the events that lead to the 1095AD quest to Jerusalem. Rubenstein applies all of the legends, myths and truths from this time period and uses them to create a clear story of those events.
The book is about as raw as the stories beginning told. Rubenstein found a great way to tell an exciting story built on an extensive historical foundation. The back of the book is filled with notes from each chapter citing sources.
The story is fast paced and this reviewer was surprised by how quickly the book was finished. This work is a perfect blend of military and religious history, with some great inner politics on the side. It is a brilliant piece of work and would be the shining jewel to a historian's shelf.

HIMS!

Just what I needed for my MHA/MBA program. Was a book required for the dual degree.

Solid book, but dare I say -- TOO full of information? This book is kind of all over the board when it comes to addressing the content. It's almost like the content is being sprayed at you with a firehose. Not that it is too complex or heavy, it's just kind of all over the place and does way too in depth at times.

The Author, Impressed With His Command of Multisyllabic and Technical Sounding Words and Phrases

This book, which is ostensibly about the transition from paper-based medical records to the electronic health record (EHR), reads like a manual for a system written in one language, then poorly translated into English.

That foreign language is bureaucratese. But the translation reads more like gobbledygook. The book's structure is so jam-packed full of information concerning every acronym and abbreviation in the medical and federal alphabet agency worlds, that only by sheer-power of having a photographic memory will the reader ever remember any of it.

The nature of this book requires graphic simplification, grouping, and many illustrations to put all that information into a semblance of cohesiveness. The book's "organization" offers none of it.

I am certain the author and his editor are quite very impressed about being able to, as it were, cram ten pounds of manure into a five-pound bag. But, this book fails in its primary mission of imparting its information to the student in such a manner in which it can be easily comprehended. But, since the purpose of college textbooks is not so much to impart knowledge as it is to gouge college students, this book at least succeeds in the department of collusion with public colleges' bookstores.

What a beautifully written collection of poems

I must say I have really enjoyed the poems I've read thus far. Anna Journey has an expansive mind and knows how to use it. The texture and layering of the poems is really well done and I got this feeling of nostalgia for the beginning of the poems once I reached the end. It was like each one is built on its own mini relationship. Anyone who enjoys contemporary poetry should give this book a gander.

Vulgar Remedies Indeed.

These poems thrill my soul. Why? I'm not completely sure. All I can say is that I read a lot of poetry, and occasionally, a poet resonates with me. This is the work of one of those poets. I adore this collection and I want you to read it.
